Marketplace or own sales - which is more profitable?

Marketplace or own sales - which is more profitable?

October 31, 2026

Your first sale on a marketplace can be a huge relief. You upload an e-book, course, or template, and the product appears thanks to someone else's traffic, and you don't have to build the entire infrastructure immediately. The problem begins shortly after: marketplace or your own sales – where are you truly building an asset, and where are you just renting shelf space?

This isn't a debate about which model is "better" for everyone. For a creator starting out without an audience, a marketplace can be a testing ground. For an expert looking to scale a product, increase cart values, and launch affiliate marketing, a dedicated sales channel typically provides significantly more fuel.

Marketplace or self-sale: the difference doesn't end with commission

The commission is immediately visible, which is why it attracts the most attention. You see the product price, see the deduction, and calculate how much is left. However, this is only part of the cost. Providing a customer relationship, data on their behavior, and the ability to lead them to another purchase can be much more expensive.

On a marketplace, a customer often purchases a product within the platform environment. They remember its name, its appearance, and its mechanics. You provide the knowledge, but you don't always control the next steps: whether the person sees your extended offer, receives notification about a new course, or returns to you in a month.

When you're selling your own products, you design a funnel that fits your business model. You can see where the order came from, which products the same people are buying, and where checkout is losing customers. This isn't a technical detail. If 100 people a month land on the checkout page, and a simpler form increases checkout completion by a few percentage points, you'll recover sales without adding advertising budget.

Your own channel also allows you to set your price, communication, and offer without having to conform to the rules of someone else's website. Selling a course for PLN 249? You can add a checkbox at checkout with an additional PLN 29 for a package of ready-made worksheets. Selling a Notion template? Offer a PRO version with a library of 50 additional blocks for PLN 39. This is where the average order value increases.

When a marketplace makes sense

Marketplace isn't a mistake. It's a channel with a specific price and a specific purpose. It works well when you want to quickly gauge demand for a small product, don't yet have a community, or are entering a niche where buyers are actively seeking ready-made materials.

Let's say you're creating your first set of Canva templates for tutors. Before you record a comprehensive course and build your own funnel, you can list a simple package, review client questions, and see which use cases generate the most interest. If they're most likely to ask about materials for high school graduates, you have a clear direction for your next offering.

However, don't treat the marketplace as a destination for your business. Treat it as a vantage point. A product that has proven demand is worth developing in a place where you can build your own customer base, create packages, and launch referral partners.

The risk is dependency. When most of your revenue comes from a single external directory, a change in exposure rules, commissions, or product recommendation methods can impact your results overnight. You have no influence over this traffic, so you also lack full control over maintaining it.

What are the benefits of selling your own digital products?

Selling your own doesn't mean you have to manually send files, manage payments, and respond to messages like "where's my e-book?" In a well-established environment, the process should work from click to access without your involvement: the customer pays, receives a sales document, and has immediate access to the purchased product.

This frees up time, but another important point is that you can consciously increase the value of each acquired customer. Instead of selling a single file for 19 PLN, you build a simple ladder of offers. Free content generates interest, an entry-level product solves one pressing problem, and a premium course or package leads to greater results.

You don't need ten products. You need a meaningful next step. The author of an e-book on study planning might offer a Notion planner for 27 PLN after purchase. A language course creator might add a set of pronunciation exercises. A graphic design educator might combine the course with a package of editable templates. Such combinations are natural because the customer is buying a further acceleration of the effect, not a random addition.

Having your own store also gives you the freedom to sell outside of Poland. If your e-book or template addresses a problem that's also understandable abroad, prepare an English version and display the price in EUR or USD. Multi-currency support eliminates friction at the checkout stage, and automated order processing allows you to sell at any time without manually uploading files.

Customer data is worth more than a single transaction

It's not about collecting data for the sake of collecting it. It's about making decisions based on facts. When you see that your mini-course is primarily purchased by people from a specific campaign or partner, you can replicate the activities that generate money instead of blindly shooting for it.

Monitor three things weekly: the number of visits to the product page, conversion to purchase, and average order value. If visits are high but sales are low, the problem usually lies with the promise, price, or checkout. If sales are good but cart volume is low, test a bundle or a checkout surcharge. If your results increase based on recommendations from a single creator, don't stop at one post—offer them ongoing affiliate partnerships .

Affiliation has a particular advantage when it comes to knowledge products. The affiliate doesn't have to create the product or service customers, and you pay a commission for real, paid results. The condition is simple: the system must fairly attribute sales, calculate the commission, and display the numbers to both parties. Otherwise, the affiliate doesn't know if their work is effective, and you lose the motivation of valuable partners.

Start with specifics. Choose five creators who already speak to your audience and send each a short message. Showcase the product, the results for their community, and a clear commission rate. Don't ask for a "promotion." Propose a campaign with your own link, a timeframe, and time-saving materials.

Don't build your own sales like an IT project

The most common mistake creators make? They think the alternative to a marketplace is to assemble sales from five random tools: separate payments, a separate website, separate automations, separate product delivery, separate invoices and reports. At first, it looks cheap. Then, a single failure, a lost order, or a misallocated commission costs more than all the apparent savings.

Your job is to develop your product and acquire customers, not to check daily if your file has arrived after payment. Therefore, your sales should run on a single engine that handles checkout, product access, sales documents, analytics, and affiliation.

With NetBiznes, you can set up this process without a fixed subscription fee – commission-based billing occurs when you actually sell. The customer completes the payment, the partner is assigned a commission, and the buyer immediately downloads the material. You see the sale instead of collecting tickets for manual processing.

It's your turn to move

If you already have a product, don't wait until it's "perfect." Set up one sales page, one specific shopping cart improvement, and one traffic acquisition channel. For the next 14 days, measure visits, purchases, and order value. After that, you're no longer guessing—you have the numbers to base your next decision on.

If you've been relinquishing control of your marketplace, start regaining it gradually. Move your best-selling product to your own channel, enable automatic access, and invite your first affiliate partners. When registering with NetBiznes, check the current promotional period for reduced commissions. This is a good time to stop renting sales and start building revenue that supports your brand.
